FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
What do I need to do to enroll my child in STRIVE?
Students who receive short-term suspension (1 to 10 days) may be eligible to enroll in the STRIVE program. Parents,
guardians or school personnel can call STRIVE's office at 757-484-8794 to arrange an orientation. During the intake
process, parents/guardians of youth accepted into STRIVE must complete a code of conduct acknowledgement agreement.
You can start the enrollment process by downloading the referral form on this page and faxing the completed form to
757-484-1339, email it to [email protected] or mail the form to: STRIVE, 5910 Arden Stnue, Portsmouth, VA 23703.
Why refer a student to STRIVE?
Students need to be in school. Statistical data indicates that students suspended from school are at increased risk
for academic failure, alcohol and illegal substance use and abuse, school dropout and teenage pregnancy. The far
reaching implications of those problems result in critical community concerns that are based on specific risk factors
for low income, at-risk students, academic achievement gaps, accessibility to enriching and safe social and
self-development settings.
How long can my child participate in STRIVE?
STRIVE program participants are enrolled in the program for the number of days they are suspended - one to ten days.
Does STRIVE provide student support beyond the days my child is enrolled in the program?
Yes, STRIVE's new after school program provides assistance "beyond the bell."
My child was suspended, but he's not enrolled in STRIVE. What do I need to do to get him enrolled?
Please contact your child's school principal or guidance counselor for a referral to the STRIVE program, or call
the STRIVE office at 757-484-8794 for assistance..
